- featured image

A creamy, festive Puerto Rican holiday drink combining traditional coquito with a derby punch twist featuring citrus and warm spices. Perfect for holiday gatherings and easy to make in under 20 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (13.5 oz / 400 ml) coconut cream
  • 1 can (12 oz / 355 ml) evaporated milk
  • 1 can (14 oz / 400 ml) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup (240 ml) white Puerto Rican rum (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (plus extra for garnish)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (freshly grated if possible)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves (optional)
  • Optional garnishes: cinnamon sticks, grated nutmeg, toasted coconut flakes

Instructions

  1. Gather all your ingredients. Setting everything out beforehand makes the process smoother and faster. (5 minutes)
  2. Combine the coquito base ingredients: In your blender, add the coconut cream, evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, rum, and vanilla extract. Blend on medium speed until fully combined and smooth. (3-4 minutes)
  3. Add the derby punch twist: Pour in the freshly squeezed orange juice, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves (if using). Blend again on low speed just to mix in the spices evenly. (1-2 minutes)
  4. Taste and adjust: Add more cinnamon, nutmeg, or condensed milk if desired. (2 minutes)
  5. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a large pitcher or punch bowl for a silky smooth finish (optional). (3 minutes)
  6. Chill thoroughly: Refrigerate the punch for at least 2 hours or overnight to meld flavors.
  7. Serve: Pour over ice cubes in festive glasses and garnish with a cinnamon stick, grated nutmeg, or toasted coconut flakes. (5 minutes)

Notes

Do not over-blend after adding citrus to avoid curdling. Chill coconut cream before blending to prevent grainy texture. For non-alcoholic version, omit rum and substitute with milk or coconut milk. The punch tastes best after chilling overnight but can be served immediately over ice if short on time.
