A quick and easy appetizer featuring crispy baguette slices topped with creamy goat cheese and a homemade fig jam made with dried figs, fig preserves, balsamic vinegar, and fresh thyme. Perfect for entertaining or a simple snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 French baguette (about 12 ounces), sliced into 1/2-inch rounds
  • 8 ounces goat cheese log, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup dried Black Mission figs, stems removed and roughly chopped
  • 1/2 cup fig jam or preserves
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves, plus extra for garnish
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • Optional: 1/4 cup toasted walnuts or pecans, roughly chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Slice the baguette into 1/2-inch thick rounds (about 20-24 slices).
  2. Arrange the baguette slices on a baking sheet in a single layer. Brush the tops lightly with olive oil, flip and brush the other side.
  3. Toast the bread for 5 to 7 minutes, flipping halfway through, until both sides are golden and crisp.
  4. While the bread toasts, make the jam: In a small saucepan, combine the chopped dried figs, fig jam, water, balsamic vinegar, and honey. Stir and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  5. Let the jam simmer for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the dried figs soften and the mixture thickens slightly.
  6. Remove the pan from heat and stir in the fresh thyme leaves. Let cool for a minute or two. Add a pinch of salt to taste.
  7. Spread the softened goat cheese on each toasted baguette slice (about 1 tablespoon per slice).
  8. Spoon a small amount of the warm fig jam on top of the goat cheese (about 1 teaspoon per crostini).
  9. Finish with a sprinkle of fresh thyme leaves and a tiny pinch of flaky sea salt. If using, scatter toasted nuts on top. Serve immediately.

Notes

These are best eaten right away. The bread will start to soften after about 15 minutes. For parties, toast the bread and make the jam ahead of time, then assemble right before serving. The jam can be made up to a week in advance and stored in the fridge.
