A quick and easy comfort meal combining thickly sliced hot dogs and hearty beans simmered in a savory tomato sauce, perfect for a warm, filling dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) hot dogs, sliced into thick rounds
  • 2 cups (about 480ml) canned beans, drained and rinsed (pinto or kidney beans recommended; black beans optional)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup (240ml) tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
  • ½ cup (120ml) water or broth, to thin if needed

Instructions

  1. Slice the hot dogs into thick rounds about ½ inch thick. Chop the onion finely and mince the garlic. Drain and rinse the beans thoroughly.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil or butter over medium heat in a large skillet. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened and translucent, about 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
  4. Push the onions and garlic to the side of the pan. Add the sliced hot dogs in a single layer and brown on one side without stirring for about 3 minutes, then flip to brown the other side until golden.
  5. Pour in the drained beans and tomato sauce. Stir gently to combine. Add brown sugar, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce (if using), and salt and pepper. Stir to mix evenly.
  6. Reduce heat to low, cover the pan, and let simmer gently for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add up to ½ cup water or broth if the mixture is too thick, aiming for a thick stew-like consistency.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Remove from heat and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Browning the hot dogs properly adds a smoky, caramelized flavor. Rinsing canned beans reduces excess salt. For a creamier texture, mash some beans while stirring. If short on time, skip browning but flavor will be less deep. Adjust seasoning gradually and taste as you go.
