These tender, spiced pumpkin scones with a signature glaze taste just like the coffee shop version but are made at home with simple ingredients. A happy accident turned into a fall favorite that’s quick, easy, and absolutely delicious.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup (65g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon (15g) baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons (85g) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
  • 1/2 cup (120g) pumpkin puree
  • 1/3 cup (80ml) heavy cream, plus extra for brushing
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (120g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons (30-45ml) milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400ยฐF (200ยฐC). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour, 1/3 cup (65g) granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon (15g) baking powder, 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
  3. Add 6 tablespoons (85g) of cold, cubed unsalted butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or two forks to cut the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized pieces of butter.
  4. In a separate small bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup (120g) pumpkin puree, 1/3 cup (80ml) heavy cream, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until smooth.
  5. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir with a fork or spatula just until the dough starts to come together. It will look shaggy and a little dry.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently bring it together with your hands, patting it into a 6-inch (15cm) circle that’s about 3/4-inch (2cm) thick.
  7. Use a bench scraper or sharp knife to cut the circle into 8 equal wedges. Transfer the wedges to the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches (5cm) apart.
  8. Brush the tops of the scones with a little extra heavy cream.
  9. Bake for 14 to 16 minutes, or until the scones are lightly golden on the bottom and the edges are set. Let them cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. While the scones are cooling, make the spiced glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together 1 cup (120g) sifted powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons (30ml) milk, 1/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth. Adjust consistency with more milk or powdered sugar as needed.
  11. Once the scones are completely cool, drizzle the glaze over the tops using a spoon or a piping bag. Let the glaze set for about 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Keep all ingredients cold for flaky scones. Do not over-mix the dough. For best results, let scones cool completely before glazing. Can be made ahead and refrigerated overnight before baking.
