A quick, warming fire cider recipe that uses a gentle heat method to extract immune-boosting goodness from ginger, turmeric, and horseradish in under an hour. Perfect for cold and flu season, this balanced tonic is surprisingly drinkable and easy to make.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (480 ml) raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar
  • 3 ounces (85 grams) fresh ginger, unpeeled and roughly chopped
  • 2 ounces (55 grams) fresh turmeric, unpeeled and roughly chopped
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) fresh horseradish root, peeled and grated
  • 4 large garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1/2 medium onion, roughly chopped
  • 1 small jalapeño, sliced (or 1/2 teaspoon cayenne flakes)
  • 1/4 cup (85 grams) raw honey, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns
  • Optional: fresh rosemary sprig, cinnamon stick, or lemon slice

Instructions

  1. Prep the aromatics: Scrub ginger and turmeric thoroughly; roughly chop into 1/4-inch pieces. Peel and grate horseradish. Crush garlic cloves. Roughly chop onion. Slice jalapeño into thin rounds.
  2. Combine ingredients in a medium saucepan: Add apple cider vinegar, then add ginger, turmeric, horseradish, garlic, onion, jalapeño, and black peppercorns. Stir gently. Do not add honey yet.
  3. Heat gently over medium-low heat to 160-170°F (70-75°C) for 20-25 minutes. Do not simmer or boil. Stir occasionally.
  4. Remove from heat, cover, and let steep for 15 minutes.
  5. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into a measuring cup or bowl, pressing on solids to extract liquid. Discard solids.
  6. While liquid is still warm, add raw honey and stir until dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness or pungency if desired.
  7. Pour into a clean glass jar using a funnel. Seal tightly, cool to room temperature, then refrigerate.

Notes

Temperature control is crucial—keep heat low to avoid boiling. Do not skip black pepper; it enhances curcumin absorption. Grate horseradish fresh for maximum potency. The flavor mellows after 2 weeks in the fridge. For a milder version, reduce horseradish and omit jalapeño. For a honey-free option, omit or substitute with stevia.
