Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed, about 8 oz / 225 g)
  • 6 oz (170 g) sliced deli ham, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (about 4 oz / 115 g)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano or Italian seasoning (optional)
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • ยฝ cup mayonnaise
  • ยผ cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, finely chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional: 1-2 tablespoons buttermilk or milk to thin the ranch if desired

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400ยฐF (200ยฐC). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, gently roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet to about 12 x 10 inches (30 x 25 cm).
  3. Spread the softened butter evenly over the pastry, leaving a ยฝ inch border around the edges.
  4. Layer the ham slices evenly over the buttered pastry.
  5. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top of the ham, then add dried oregano and freshly ground black pepper.
  6. Roll the pastry tightly from the long edge into a log about 12 inches (30 cm) long, tucking edges in as you go.
  7. Slice the log into 1-inch (2.5 cm) thick pinwheels, yielding about 12 pieces.
  8. Place the pinwheels on the prepared baking sheet, spacing about 1 inch apart.
  9. Bake for 15-18 minutes until pastry is puffed and golden and cheese is bubbly, checking after 12 minutes to avoid burning.
  10. While baking, whisk together mayonnaise, sour cream, chives, garlic powder, onion powder, lemon juice, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Add milk a little at a time to reach desired consistency.
  11. Serve warm pinwheels fresh from the oven with creamy ranch on the side for dipping.

Notes

If dough feels too warm and sticky, chill in fridge for 10 minutes before rolling. Use sharp slicing tools like a pizza cutter for neat pinwheels. Tent with foil if cheese bubbles too fast to prevent burning. Homemade ranch dip is recommended but store-bought can be enhanced with fresh herbs. For gluten-free, use gluten-free puff pastry. Vegetarian substitutions include sautรฉed mushrooms, spinach, or roasted red peppers with feta cheese.
